MUD Jeans, established by Bert van Son in 2013 is a unique denim brand from the Netherlands that offers you a choice of either rent, or buy their products, and is fully committed to a circular economy. Bert has experience in the fashion industry for over 30 years and witnessed its impacts on the workers as well as nature, so he decided to create a brand that erases those impacts and also sets a business that comes with solutions rather than more waste.
And what does MUD Jean's name stands for? For mud, nature’s circle economy, an important mixture of soil and water that is important for the eco-system.
And as you rightly guessed already, the jeans are made of 40% recycled old denim with a combination of a virgin one.

So what is the story behind the brand’s circular practices?
Currently, 23-40% of the used materials are made of recycled denim. The brand takes in used jeans of any brand and turned them into fiber that is combined with virgin cotton to make new jeans. And this year, they are planning to make a full 100% recycled cotton collection as well. The brand eliminated PP spray, using Cradle2Cradle (C2C) indigo dye, and the factory’s laundry recycles 95% of its water through reverse osmosis. All tags are made of paper instead of leather, and the products are 100% organic and vegan. MUD Jeans pays fair salary to its workers, offer free repairs of their jeans, and supports upcycling of their old jeans by cleaning and fixing them and finding them new owner via their Vintage Program.
The philosophy of the brand is rather slow fashion, providing the consumer with only a few models, contrary to 6 collections a year of fast fashion brands. Have we also mentioned, that the headquarters are located in the forest office in Laren, where they bake their bread?
